Bicentennial Volunteers, Inc. Undergoes Strategic Planning & SaaS Modernization
About Bicentennial Volunteers Inc. (BVI):
Bicentennial Volunteers, Inc. is the collective term for three related non-profit organizations – Bicentennial Volunteers, Inc (BVI), National Emergency Assistance (NEA), and Retiree Resources Corporation (RRC). Together, these three entities support the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) mission of energy, environment, and economic development by providing TVA retirees and former TVA employees with the opportunity to get involved in volunteer work, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) work, and TVA contract work.
The Situation:
BVI, serving as the management organization for the three entities, recognized the need to refresh their strategic plan. The goal was to align the organizations to a unified mission and vision that reflected their overarching purpose of "Connecting People with Purpose" while addressing emerging challenges such as talent development and energy burdens in the communities they serve. While aligning on a unified mission and vision was the overarching goal, BVI’s needs also included a detailed roadmap for the implementation of a strategic plan and the evaluation of technology to ensure necessary support, as well as defining operational improvement and identifying governance enhancements.
The Solution:
To address this, BVI engaged Bridge Innovate to refresh their strategic direction across all three entities. The collaborative effort focused on:
Revising the overarching purpose and vision for BVI and each entity.
Defining individual strategies for each entity to fulfill this vision, including service and operational enhancements.
Bridge Innovate and BVI conducted in-depth research in four key areas:
External Inspiration: Identifying best practices and innovative strategies from outside organizations.
Stakeholder Interviews: Gathering insights from key stakeholders within and outside the organization.
SWOT Analysis: Analyzing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of each entity.
Staff Research: Engaging internal teams to gather insights and recommendations.
Midway through the project, a new need emerged: modernizing and streamlining the software enablement systems across the three organizations. To address this, Bridge Innovate added a SaaS Modernization section to the research phase, ensuring the technology would support the long-term strategy.
Following the research phase, Bridge Innovate facilitated a strategy design and prioritization session, which resulted in a comprehensive strategic plan for the next 3-5 years.
The Impact:
The outcome was a robust 3-5 year strategic plan encompassing six strategic initiatives, each supported by clear goals, KPIs, and action plans. In addition, Bridge Innovate provided a future-state technology roadmap for each entity and established clear leadership and governance responsibilities to guide the execution of the plan. The strategic plan also included a mobilization framework to ensure effective implementation across all three entities, positioning BVI, RRC, and NEA for sustainable success.
This collaborative effort has not only refreshed the vision and mission but also laid a strong foundation for addressing critical community issues, including talent development and energy burdens, while modernizing the organization’s technological infrastructure.
