Ever since witnessing her mother operate a small service station during the 1970’s, Virginia Murphy has pushed herself toward an ethical, empathetic career path in the skilled trade(s). Alongside her unwavering faith in God, Virginia has managed to tackle her fears as a minority-woman owned company owner in a historically male-dominated field. Over the course of 15+ years in the wastewater treatment industry, she has refined a series of lessons for aspiring and working business owners.
Lesson #1: STICK WITH YOUR VISION. No one should be able to change your vision, except for yourself and God.
Lesson #2: HELP OTHERS WHEN YOU CAN. Always think of how you can extend courtesy to others.
Lesson #3: IT’S OKAY TO FAIL. While failures may hurt, learning comes from those failures.
Lesson #4: GO BACK TO LESSON #1 AND FOCUS.
Lesson #5: MANAGE YOUR BUSINESS, YOU’RE NOT JUST ANOTHER EMPLOYEE. Learning via classes and seminars is not enough; you must take action with your company.
Lesson #6: YOU ARE NOT THE EXPERT AT EVERYTHING. There are not enough hours in the day to do everything. Allow others to learn, grow, and eventually become experts!
Lesson #7: DO IT AFRAID. Do not allow fear to prevent yourself from doing amazing work.
Lesson #8: DO YOUR HOMEWORK. Try your best to understand your customer.
Lesson #9: GET A TRUSTED CIRCLE. No one is successful without assistance. You need mentors; “If you are the smartest one in your circle, you have got the wrong circle.”
As a minority-woman-owned business owner, Virginia Murphy has acquired myriad certifications, including Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB) and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) certifications. She was recently invited to the White House for a larger discussion around normalizing and promoting the skilled trades.
